The Verse of Light · An-Nūr 24:35
نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍ
“Light upon light —”
A parable of His Light
a niche — mishkāt
within it a lamp — miṣbāḥ
the glass like a brilliant star
The blessed olive
neither of the east nor the west
its oil almost glows, untouched by fire

The lamp is already set in the niche of your chest. Let it be lit — light upon light.

A breath of the Sacred

وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي
“…and I breathed into him of My spirit —”

The pattern you were made upon
The fiṭrah · Ar-Rūm 30:30
فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا
“…the fiṭrah of Allah upon which He created people —”
Your original orientation
set your face to the upright way
an innate disposition toward truth
no change in the creation of Allah
The ego only buries it
the fiṭra is not lost, only covered
purification clears away the dust
the needle still points home
You are not building a new self — you are returning to the one you were made upon.

Where the heart finds rest
Ar-Ra'd 13:28
أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
“…surely in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest.”

The rust that veils the heart
Al-Muṭaffifīn 83:14
رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
“…the rust has covered their hearts of what they earned —”
Why hearts darken
each sin leaves a mark
marks build into rust — rān
the rust veils the light
But rust can be polished
istighfār and good deeds polish it
the mirror can shine again
a cleaned heart reflects the Light
The heart is a mirror. Sin is the rust, repentance the polish — and light is what returns.

The chest that opens to light
Al-An'ām 6:125
يَشْرَحْ صَدْرَهُ لِلْإِسْلَامِ
“…He expands his breast to surrender —”
When guidance comes
the breast is opened wide
room for light and surrender
When one turns away
the breast tightens and constricts
“as though climbing into the sky”
the airless ascent of a closed heart

Closer than the jugular vein
Qāf 50:16
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ
“…and We are closer to him than his jugular vein.”
He knows the whisper of the soul
He created you
He hears what the nafs whispers
nothing of you is hidden from Him
So the Light is never far
nearer than your own pulse
you seek what is already with you
turn inward, and find Him present
You were never far from the Light — only turned away from what is closer than your own vein.

Never despair of His mercy
Az-Zumar 39:53
لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ
“…do not despair of the mercy of Allah —”
To the soul that wronged itself
“O My servants who transgressed against themselves”
the door is not closed
The promise
Allah forgives all sins
He is the Forgiving, the Merciful
no darkness is beyond His light
However far the nafs has wandered, mercy is wider. Despair is the one veil He asks you to drop.

“O soul at peace —”

The trust the mountains refused
Al-Aḥzāb 33:72
وَحَمَلَهَا الْإِنسَانُ
“…but the human bore it —”
The offer
the trust — amāna — offered to heavens, earth, mountains
they declined, in awe and fear
The human bore it
only the human accepted
a weight of will, choice, accountability
the dignity and the danger together
So carry it well
the trust can be betrayed or honoured
to bear light is to be responsible for it
You carry what the mountains would not. Bear the trust toward the Light — that is the whole of the path.

بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ

What the Light Verse asks of us
